Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,Neurometabolics is an emerging topic in neurology. Neurometabolic disorders arerare and complex diseases that not only negatively influence brain function butoften involve multiple organ systems. This multisystemic involvement requiresinterdisciplinary medical care that needs to be virtuously synchronized. Historically, these patients were children monitored in pediatric departments, but the numberof patients who mature to reach adulthood, as well as late-onset diagnoses, is onthe rise. Thus, the increasing number of adult patients monitored in pediatricdepartments or transitioned to adult departments poses new challenges. This first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary symposium “Neurometabolics” aims to tacklethese challenging aspects of patient care. We – adult neurologists – must understand the metabolic aspects of these diseases, working closely with metabolicexperts and other specialties. At this symposium, the experts will include:

  • Prof. Dr. med. Susanne Schneider, PhD, a renowned expert on movement disorders who focuses on neurometabolic conditions and who will provide us with an overview of neurometabolic diseases.
  • Key Opinion Leader Prof. Frances Platt, FRS FMedSci, Professor of Biochemistry and Pharmacology and Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, who focuses on the pathophysiological aspects of lysosomal storage disorders.
  • Prof. Marc Patterson, MD, Professor of neurology, pediatrics and medical genetics, and chair of the Division of Child and Adolescent Neurology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, who has dedicated his life to studying serious neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Neurometabolic experts Dr. Anna Ardissone and Dr. Ettore Salsano, who will provide us with valuable and real-life insights into patient transition within their institution.
