External health services research plays a central role in the translation of scientific findings into everyday healthcare. Large hospital companies in particular benefit from this, as they operate complex healthcare structures with many patients, specialist departments, and interfaces. Research outside the university—for example, in practice-oriented institutes or in-house research units—makes it possible to systematically analyze and improve specific challenges in everyday clinical practice. This results in well-founded recommendations that can be directly incorporated into healthcare, for example, in the optimization of treatment processes, the enhancement of patient safety, or the use of digital solutions. Thus, non-university health services research makes an important contribution to successful translation and the sustainable improvement of the quality of care.
